A variety of factors convinced us to manufacture a series of diecast models replicating the 1970-1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme and 4-4-2. After seeing many of these cars at shows such as Kruse Classic Car Auction and Show in Auburn Indiana, the Oldsmobile Homecoming in Lansing Michigan, the Red Barn Spectacular at the Gilmore Classic Car Museum in Hickory Corners, Michigan, and the All GM Show in Carlisle, Pennsylvania we began talking with many of the real car owners. We soon learned from several of these owners that there was a demand for a diecast replica of their car. Upon further research we discovered that in the 10 years plus that a 1:18 scale diecast has existed, no manufacturer has ever offered a model of the 1970, 1971, or 1972 Cutlass Supreme or 4-4-2 in this scale. With permission of General Motors' Oldsmobile Licensing Division, Exact Detail Replicas is proud to offer this stunning model, hand assembled from 287 total parts.
During the 12 month process of researching and designing the Oldsmobile Cutlass and 4-4-2 projects, we became friends with many of the real car owners. In fact, we used many of their cars as sources of information during design of our replica. Several were original unrestored cars, including an Ebony black 1971 4-4-2 W-30 with less than 28,000 original miles. This stunning ride was conveniently located less than 10 miles from the Exact Detail design office. Other cars we studied, also located in Michigan, included a 1971 Cutlass Supreme Convertible, a 1972 Cutlass Supreme hardtop, and a one owner 1972 Hurst Olds. We even had the privilege of watching as a Rallye 350 was stripped down to the frame at a local body shop and built back up as a historically correct restoration. An employee of Lane Automotive, who is also a long time Oldsmobile enthusiast, was a big help with the detailing of this model. He has owned several Oldsmobiles over the years and his current collection consists of a 1969 Hurst Olds, and two 1970 4-4-2 W-30's. Many times when we had a question, the answer was just a phone call away due to his contacts with several Oldsmobile clubs.
